Not The NUFC Amazon Documentary

Lorton Entertainment and 72 Films have made a four-part documentary on Newcastle United Football Club to be shown on Amazon Prime. It will be released on August 11th, to coincide with the start of the 2023/24 Premier League Football season.

The trailer features Newcastle United Chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan and was on released the same day that the government in which he is a minister is putting on trial 29 year old fitness teacher Manahel al-Otaibi for not wearing “decent” clothes & tweeting feminist hashtags including #EndMaleGuardianship

The trailer also shows footage of fans chanting, "We’ve got our club back!" on the day of the takeover. Nothing could be further from the truth. The Premier League unfortunately allowed our club to be sold to one of the bloodiest regimes on the planet.

It looks like the Amazon ‘documentary’ will just be the latest example of how the Saudi dictatorship are using our historic club as a sportswashing tool to divert attention away from the suppression of the free speech of young Saudi women like Manahel al-Otaibi.

The slick documentary is an attempt to stop people talking about the nine young men currently on death row in Saudi Arabia, arrested for ‘crimes’ committed when they were children and in some cases tortured into making ‘confessions’.

It will be very surprising if the documentary takes a critical view of the Saudi state, or goes into the issues of states owning football clubs, sportswashing and how the regime is seeking to use the club to launder its reputation. With such focus on the new owners and their investment, will this documentary actually explore who they are and their motivations for buying our club?

NUFC Fans Against Sportswashing has not been approached for an interview and we are not aware that any NUFC fans or organisations which are critical of the Saudi owners will appear in the documentary.

We feel strongly that an alternative view has to get out. We are therefore proposing that Saudi human rights groups, anti-death penalty campaigners and NUFC fans collaborate on a NOT THE NUFC AMAZON DOCUMENTARY’.

This will be a series of short videos which will go into the issue of sportswashing, state ownership of football clubs, but most of all gives a voice to the Saudi victims of the 80% NUFC owners and Newcastle fans who take a critical view of the present owners.
